I was born and grew up in London a very long time ago. I haven’t lived there now for many years, but it’s still my town. I’m a Londoner in just the same way that I’m a fan of Tottenham Hotspur. I studied philosophy at university- mainly German philosophy, and moved to Germany with the forlorn hope of finding out why the Jewish people to whom I belong, should no longer be on the planet. No answer to that one. I stayed and through working on a cultural project in the west of Frankfurt , I was able to combine my interest in theatre with the social and political need to contribute in a progressive way to a rapidly changing world. I co-founded IL TEATRO SICILIANO with a large number of young Sicilian and Southern Italian workers. This became the first immigrant theatre in West Germany at the time, and provided me with the context through which I could learn to become a director. Learning by doing. Many years of working and learning , developing new forms of the Commedia dell’Arte amongst other things. I got asked by the State Theater in Stuttgart to do a similar project , which I did with young immigrants from the city, and then got asked to direct operas for the Stuttgarter Opera House.This is how I became an opera director- directing over 40 operas between then and now. A lot of learning by doing.At the same time I continued to work in the theatre in Germany and elsewhere, until I got the opportunity to become Professor for Acting and Directing at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. That was between 1993 and 2013. Of course, I had the opportunity to continue my work in theatres, opera houses and festivals throughout this period. Since 2013 I have been working as a freelance artist with a lot of my work happening in Poland, where I also have a Guest Professorship for Acting and Directing at the Music Academy in Katowice.
Over the last few years I have been developing my own projects which can no longer be categorised as theatre or opera. For each project I need to find a new and specific form, if you’re interested you can read about that work on the website. Sometimes they’re installations, sometimes they’re performances , sometimes they’re both. I’m still spending my time learning by doing.

Ich bin vor sehr langer Zeit in London geboren und aufgewachsen. Ich lebe jetzt schon seit vielen Jahren nicht mehr dort, aber es ist immer noch meine Stadt. Ich bin ein Londoner, genauso wie ich ein Fan von Tottenham Hotspur bin. Ich habe an der Universität Philosophie studiert – hauptsächlich deutsche Philosophie – und bin nach Deutschland gezogen in der vergeblichen Hoffnung, herauszufinden, warum das jüdische Volk, zu dem ich gehöre, nicht mehr auf der Welt sein sollte. Darauf gab es keine Antwort. Ich blieb und durch die Arbeit an einem Kulturprojekt im Frankfurter Westen konnte ich mein Interesse am Theater mit dem sozialen und politischen Bedürfnis verbinden, einen progressiven Beitrag zu einer sich schnell verändernden Welt zu leisten. Ich co-gründete IL TEATRO SICILIANO mit einer großen Anzahl junger sizilianischer und süditalienischer Arbeiter. Das wurde damals das erste Immigrantentheater in Westdeutschland und bot mir den Kontext, in dem ich lernen konnte, ein Regisseur zu werden. Learning by doing. Viele Jahre des Arbeitens und Lernens, in denen ich u.a. neue Formen der Commedia dell’Arte entwickelte. Ich wurde vom Staatstheater Stuttgart gebeten, ein ähnliches Projekt zu machen, das ich mit jungen Immigranten aus der Stadt durchführte, und wurde dann gebeten, Opern für das Stuttgarter Opernhaus zu inszenieren. So wurde ich ein Opernregisseur – ich inszenierte über 40 Opern zwischen damals und heute. Parallel dazu habe ich weiter am Theater in Deutschland und anderswo gearbeitet, bis ich die Möglichkeit bekam, Professor für Schauspiel und Regie an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen zu werden. Das war zwischen 1993 und 2013. Natürlich hatte ich in dieser Zeit die Möglichkeit, weiterhin an Theatern, Opernhäusern und Festivals zu arbeiten. Seit 2013 bin ich als freischaffender Künstler tätig, wobei ein Großteil meiner Arbeit in Polen stattfindet, wo ich auch eine Gastprofessur für Schauspiel und Regie an der Musikakademie in Katowice habe.
In den letzten Jahren habe ich eigene Projekte entwickelt, die sich nicht mehr in die Kategorien Theater oder Oper einordnen lassen. Für jedes Projekt muss ich eine neue und spezifische Form finden, wenn Sie daran interessiert sind, können Sie über diese Arbeit auf der Website lesen. Manchmal sind es Installationen, manchmal sind es Performances, manchmal ist es beides. Ich verbringe meine Zeit immer noch mit Learning by Doing.
