Walking with Avraham
A journey of discovery, a journey that provides and makes visible a biographical account of Jewish identity. It is a journey we invite our audience to take with us.
Together with Avraham, we will traverse a history, an evolving culture and a spiritual discourse that began 3700 years ago and continues to this day. We will walk through seven different spaces, each dealing with a different aspect of being Jewish and asking questions that can be uncomfortable and disturbing. The installation-based performance uses texts, music, videos, animations and soundscapes. The presentation is in German and English.
The format is unusual and creates an immersive environment that allows the audience to experience the complexity of the narrative on many different levels.
The concept and texts were written by Brian Michaels.
The scenographic route and the spatial installations were created by Ruth Prangen.
The performance is intended as experimental artistic research.
The project was made possible by a grant from the MKW(Ministerium für Kunst und Wissenschaft NRW) and the liberal Jewish community Gescher LaMassoret Köln.
First performance: 18 December 2021, at 18.00 and 20.00 at the Arturo Schauspielschule, Bischofsweg 48, 50969 Cologne.

Am 18. 12. 2021 war in der Arturo Schauspielschule die Uraufführung von Brian Michaels: ‚Walking with Avraham‘ – eine biografische Beschreibung jüdischer Identität – zu sehen. Ein sehr besonderer Abend, der es verdient noch oft gesehen und durchschritten zu werden!
Brian Michaels – Theater- und Opernregisseur zwischen London und Warschau – lud dazu ein wie er schreibt: ‚mit Avraham eine Geschichte, eine sich entwickelnde Kultur und einen spirituellen Diskurs zu durchqueren, der vor 37000 Jahren begann und bis heute andauert‘. Dabei begibt er sich auf Avrams und die eigenen Spuren während sein Schauspiel- und Musikensemble die Teilnehmenden durch sieben thematisch zugespitzte Räume mitnimmt und dabei aktuelle Fragen jüdischer Existenz durchschreiten läßt. Es beginnt mit Moriah, der Ort der Bindung Isaaks und Machpela, der Ort des Grabes von Avraham und Sarah – es wird geschrieben, es wird gesprochen, es wird getönt, es wird gelaufen, es wird gedonnert, es wird das Aussprechliche und das Unaussprechliche, das Sichtbare und das nicht mehr Sichtbare gezeigt – und es endet mit dem zuhörenden und lächelnden Avraham, bevor dieser dann weiterschreitet…..
Die installative Performance – eine Kooperation zwischen Gescher Lamassoret und dem Ensemble Integral – verwendet Musik, Videos, Animationen, Soundscapes und Texte in deutscher und englischer Sprache. Die klare und minimalistische Raumgestaltung in schwarz weiß eröffnet einen fokussierten Erfahrungsraum. Die Tiefendimension der Texte und die vielseitigen Raumeindrücke sind bei einmaliger Sicht gar nicht alle in Gänze zu erfassen! Mit dieser installativen und intensiven Performance ließe sich wunderbar ein ganzes Wochenende gestalten, das mit theologischen und performativen Workshops die Inspiration dieser Performance aufgreift und mit Avraham (jüdisch, christlich, muslimisch und säkular) unterwegs wäre und ihm mit allen Sinnen möglicherweise auf die Spur käme….. Ich wäre dabei. Wer käme mit?….

On 18/12/2021, the Arturo Drama School hosted the world premiere of Brian Michaels: ‘Walking with Avraham’ – a biographical account of Jewish identity. A very special evening that deserves to be seen and walked through many more times!
Brian Michaels – theatre and opera director between London and Warsaw – invited us to, as he writes: ‘walk with Avraham through a history, an evolving culture and a spiritual discourse that began 3700 years ago and continues to this day’. In doing so, he follows in Avram’s footsteps and his own, while his ensemble of actors and musicians take the participants through seven thematically pointed rooms, allowing them to traverse current questions of Jewish existence. It begins with Moriah, the place of the binding of Isaac and Machpelah, the place of the grave of Avraham and Sarah – it is written, it is spoken, it is sounded, it is walked, it is thundered, it is shown the utterable and the unspeakable, the visible and the no longer visible – and it ends with the listening and smiling Avraham, before he then walks on……
The installative performance – a cooperation between Gescher Lamassoret and the Ensemble Integral – uses music, videos, animations, soundscapes and texts in German and English. The clear and minimalist spatial design in black and white opens up a focused space of experience. The depth dimension of the texts and the multifaceted spatial impressions cannot all be grasped in their entirety in a single viewing! This installation-based and intensive performance would be a wonderful way to organise an entire weekend, which would take up the inspiration of this performance with theological and performative workshops and would be on the road with Avraham (Jewish, Christian, Muslim and secular), possibly tracking him down with all the senses….. I would be there. Who would come with me?….
